My creative practice is deeply informed by my 30 years as an art teacher. My time in the classroom, where I taught everything from ceramics to printmaking, gave me a profound appreciation for creative exploration and the unique vision of each artist, especially children. Now in my own studio, I work primarily in clay, but I also enjoy the challenge of metal casting, watercolors, and murals. My work reflects a broad technical knowledge and a love for experimentation. It is a tribute to a lifetime spent fostering creativity, both in myself and in others.

About the artist

Stephen Avery is a Georgia-based artist specializing in ceramics. After a distinguished 30-year career as an art educator, he now devotes his time to a full-time studio practice, bringing a lifetime of experience and passion to his work. He loves experimenting with different techniques and media and has taught a wide variety of different types of art during his career.

Avery’s foundation in the arts began at the University of West Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in 1991. His commitment to sharing his passion with others led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Art Education, which he completed in 1998.

For three decades, Avery was a dedicated art teacher at Shakerag Elementary School in Fulton County, where he inspired countless young artists. Prior to that, from 1991 to 1995, he taught adult ceramics at The Art Place in Marietta, helping students develop their skills and find their creative voices.

Having recently retired from teaching, Stephen has returned to his own creative roots, marking an exciting new chapter in his lifelong artistic journey.
